What is a Taxonomy List Widget?

A taxonomy list widget is a widget for showing your taxonomies on your webpages, whether categories, tags or terms. Users can click them to open pages, posts or products under each taxonomy.

This can be a simple text list or a more visually pleasing design of each item. You can show them horizontally or vertically, in different layouts like grids or masonry, or even a carousel.

What features make for a good Taxonomy List Widget?

There are many features that can separate different taxonomy list addons from each other. The most important ones include:

  1. Category Type : This shoulud include all types of categories or tags, and for all types of post content like pages, posts, CPTs etc.

  2. Content : Taxonomies can have a title, image and description. Does the widget allow you to show all these items?

  3. Include/Exclude? : Can include or exclude certain taxonomies? And if so, how? By name, ID?

  4. Order : Can you order the results? Like ascending, descending? By date?

  5. Counts : Can you show the record counts for each taxonomy? Even if the ount is zero?

  6. Hide Empty? : Can you hide empty taxonomies? ie. those with no records

  7. Presets : Does it include presets?

  8. Layouts : Are there are layoutsi now the taxonomies are displayed? Horitonal, vertical? Grid or masonry, or other?

The Pros and Cons of Each Widget/Extension

This is just for simple lists of post categories, making it limited in terms of use. It does allow for re-ordering of the items though.

This is just for simple lists of post categories, making it limited in terms of use. It does allow for re-ordering of the items though.

This is another simple taxonomy listing widget for basic lists both vertically and horizontally. With a little styling, you can improve the appearance of the lists to your own designs. The ACF image addition is helpful if needing an image for the item.
